Renewing a Zimbabwean passport from the UK is a straightforward process, but it requires an in-person visit to the Zimbabwe Embassy in London and takes several weeks to complete. Understanding the requirements, fees, and timeline in advance saves considerable stress. ## The Zimbabwe Embassy in London (Zimbabwe House) All passport services for Zimbabweans in the UK are handled by the Zimbabwe Embassy, located at Zimbabwe House on the Strand in central London. The embassy serves Zimbabwean citizens residing in the UK, Ireland, and the Nordic countries. Consular services operate from 09:00 to 15:00. The main telephone number is 020 7836 7755. Unlike some embassies, walk-in attendance has been permitted for consular services — however, it is strongly advisable to contact the embassy beforehand to confirm current appointment requirements, as procedures can change. ## Who Can Apply in the UK Any Zimbabwean citizen resident in the UK can renew their passport at Zimbabwe House, including those whose passports have already expired. Applicants over 16 years old must hold a valid Zimbabwe National ID card. Married women who have taken their spouse's surname should ensure their ID reflects that name. There are no restrictions for minors, though children's applications should be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. ## The e-Passport and Why You Must Attend in Person Zimbabwe now issues biometric e-passports. Because the application process requires fingerprinting and a digital photograph to be captured electronically, postal applications are not possible. Every applicant — adult or child — must attend the embassy in person. The London embassy has the biometric capture equipment on site. Your biometric data is then submitted to the passport production facility in Harare, where the passport is manufactured before being returned to London for collection. ## Documents to Bring When attending the embassy, bring the following: - Your current or expired Zimbabwean passport - Your Zimbabwe National ID card (for applicants over 16) - Two passport photographs on a white background, sized 3.5cm x 4.5cm — note this is different from the standard UK passport photo size, so specify the Zimbabwean size when ordering - A completed application form — forms must be obtained directly from the embassy, as downloaded copies are not accepted due to fraud prevention measures - Proof of UK residence If you are unsure about any document, call the embassy before travelling to London. ## Fees (as at 2026) Passport fees are set under Statutory Instrument SI 2024-001 (Citizenship Passport Fees Amendment Regulations) and are payable in USD or the GBP equivalent at the prevailing exchange rate: - **Ordinary e-Passport:** USD $150 plus a USD $20 QR code surcharge - **Emergency 7-Day Service:** USD $250 plus a USD $20 QR code surcharge (confirm availability with the embassy before attending) - **Embassy Consular Administration Fee:** approximately £45 (confirm the exact amount with the embassy) - **Temporary Travel Document (TTD):** £115 — processed within 1–2 business days for emergency one-way travel Payment is accepted by cashier's cheque or money order made payable to "Embassy of Zimbabwe". Cash, personal cheques, and credit or debit cards are not accepted. Confirm the current accepted payment methods with the embassy before your visit. ## Processing Times For an ordinary renewal, expect a turnaround of 6 to 10 weeks from the date of your embassy appointment. Once your application is lodged and biometrics captured in London, the paperwork is forwarded to Harare for passport production. The finished passport is then returned to the London embassy, which contacts you when it is ready for collection. Emergency processing (where available) can reduce this to approximately 7 days at a higher fee. If you need to travel urgently while awaiting your passport, a Temporary Travel Document can be issued within 1–2 business days at a cost of £115. A TTD is typically valid for a single journey and should not be confused with a full passport renewal. ## Practical Tips for Diaspora Applicants - **Start early.** Given processing times of up to 10 weeks, do not wait until your passport has expired or travel is imminent before applying. - **Get the right passport photos.** UK photo booths default to UK sizing. Request Zimbabwean specifications (3.5cm x 4.5cm) explicitly. - **Carry original documents.** The embassy does not accept photocopies in place of originals for key documents. - **Confirm fees before you travel.** Embassy administration charges and exact payment instructions should be confirmed directly with Zimbabwe House, as these details can be updated. - **Budget in GBP and USD.** The passport fee itself is denominated in USD but can typically be paid in GBP at the rate applied by the mission on the day. Fees and procedures were last reviewed against official sources in August 2026. Always confirm current requirements directly with the Zimbabwe Embassy London before attending.
