Renewing a Zimbabwean passport from the UK is a multi-stage process that involves a personal visit to the Zimbabwe Embassy in London, followed by processing back in Harare. It takes longer than many people expect — typically 8 to 12 weeks for standard applications — so planning well ahead is essential.
## The Zimbabwe Embassy in London
All UK-based Zimbabweans must use the Zimbabwe Embassy at 429 Strand, London WC2R 0JR. The nearest tube stations are Charing Cross and Temple. The consular section is open Monday to Thursday, 9am to 3pm, and appointments are required for passport applications. Walk-in services are limited and subject to availability.
To book an appointment:
- Call +44 (0)20 7836 7755 during office hours (Monday to Friday, 9am to 4:30pm)
- Or email zimlondon@zimfa.gov.zw with your full name, service required, and two or three preferred dates
Appointments can fill up weeks in advance, particularly around school holidays and public holidays. Book as early as possible.
## Documents to Bring to the Embassy
Bring originals and photocopies of all of the following:
- Long original birth certificate
- National ID card or paper ID (for applicants aged 16 and over)
- Current or expired Zimbabwean passport (including a copy of the biodata page and the page showing your UK residency stamp or visa)
- If you hold another nationality, bring that passport and a copy of its biodata page
- Two recent passport-sized photographs (35mm x 45mm, white background — available from most UK pharmacies and high-street photo booths)
- Completed passport application form P1 (available from the embassy; downloaded forms are not accepted)
If you have changed your name through marriage, divorce, or deed poll, bring certified supporting documents. Any documents obtained outside Zimbabwe must be authenticated by the relevant authority and, where required, sealed by the Home Office. Incomplete applications will not be processed and you will need to rebook.
## What Happens at the Embassy
At your appointment, consular staff will check your documents, authenticate them, and capture your biometric data — fingerprints, a digital photograph, and your signature. You will pay an administration fee at the embassy at this stage. Payment is accepted in GBP at the prevailing exchange rate; confirm accepted payment methods (cash, card, or bank transfer) when booking.
You will receive a receipt or acknowledgement slip. Keep this safe.
## After the Embassy Visit: The Zimbabwe Stage
This is where the UK process differs from passport renewals in most other countries. Your application form and authenticated documents are not processed in London — they must be sent to Zimbabwe for passport production. You have two options:
**Option 1 – Send documents to a representative in Zimbabwe.** You will need to courier your stamped embassy forms, original documents, an authorisation letter naming your representative, and your old passport to a trusted family member or contact in Zimbabwe. They will then take everything to a passport office and pay the processing fee on your behalf. Courier costs from the UK to Zimbabwe run approximately £65, and your representative may need to courier the finished passport back to you.
**Option 2 – Travel to Zimbabwe yourself.** If you are travelling to Zimbabwe anyway, you can take the documents and submit them in person.
Passport offices that accept applications are located across Zimbabwe, including Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Mutare, Gwanda, Masvingo, Marondera, Chitungwiza, Beitbridge, Hwange, and several others.
## Fees
Fees are paid in two parts:
**At the London Embassy:**
An administration fee is payable at the time of your appointment. Confirm the exact amount when booking.
**In Zimbabwe (paid by your representative):**
Fees as gazetted and reported by applicants in 2024-2026:
- Ordinary e-passport: approximately USD $150, plus a $20 QR code surcharge
- Emergency/fast-track (48 hours): approximately USD $250–$270, plus $20 surcharge
- Standard 14-day processing: fees from USD $60–$100 depending on category
- 24-hour urgent passport: up to USD $318 (rarely required but has been the only option available to some applicants)
Fees in Zimbabwe are subject to change without notice. Ask your representative to photograph the payment receipt and send it to you immediately.
## Processing Times
- Standard processing: 8 to 12 weeks from submission in Zimbabwe
- Emergency/fast-track: as little as 48 hours to 3–4 weeks, depending on the option selected and paid for in Zimbabwe
Once the passport is produced in Harare, it is either returned to your Zimbabwe representative (who will courier it to you in the UK) or — if you applied via the embassy's own submission route — sent back to the London embassy for collection. The embassy will contact you when it is ready.
## Emergency Travel Documents
If your passport is lost, stolen, or expired and you need to travel to Zimbabwe urgently, the London embassy can issue a Temporary Travel Document (TTD) within 24 hours. TTDs are valid for travel to Zimbabwe only and remain valid for six months. You will need a police report (if lost or stolen), a confirmed travel itinerary, and passport photographs.
## Practical Tips
- Do not leave renewal until your passport is about to expire. The 8 to 12 week timeline means you should start at least three months before you need the passport.
- Zimbabwean national IDs are only issued inside Zimbabwe. If yours has expired or you need a new one, it must be dealt with by a representative in Zimbabwe.
- Online renewal is not available. You must attend the embassy in person for biometric capture regardless of circumstances.
- The embassy address on the official government website is listed as 429 Strand, London WC2R 0JR. Cross-check any contact details with the official embassy website at zimlondon.gov.zw before making payments or travelling.
