A National Insurance (NI) number is essential for working legally in the UK and accessing benefits. To apply: call the National Insurance number application line on 0800 141 2075. You will be asked questions to verify your identity, and may be invited to an interview at a Jobcentre Plus. You will need proof of identity (passport, BRP) and proof of your right to work in the UK. Some people receive an NI number automatically with their visa or BRP. If you start a job before receiving your NI number, your employer can still employ you — provide them with a letter confirming you have applied. Your NI number never changes once issued, even if you leave and return to the UK. It is used for tax, National Insurance contributions, and accessing certain government services. Keep your NI number safe and never share it unnecessarily.
